10 Things NOT To Do When You’re Homesick
Homesickness can hit you out of nowhere—one minute you’re excited about your new adventure, and the next, you’re longing for the comfort of home. It’s a normal part of the adjustment process, but how you handle it can make a big difference. Here are ten things you should avoid when you’re feeling homesick:
1. Don’t Isolate Yourself
It might feel natural to retreat to your room when you’re homesick (I get it, I’m an introvert!), but this only amplifies the feeling. Social interactions, even casual ones like grabbing coffee with a coworker, can make a world of difference in lifting your spirits.
2. Don’t Constantly Compare
It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing your new surroundings with home, but this can deepen your homesickness. Instead of focusing on what’s different or what you miss, try to appreciate the unique aspects of where you are now. Power move: try writing down three things every day that you like about your new environment.
3. Don’t Overindulge in Comfort Foods
Reaching for your favorite comfort foods from home from time to time can help you through some tough days. But if it becomes so common that you use it as a quick fix, you might find yourself overindulging which can lead to unhealthy habits—and might even make you feel worse in the long run. Moderation is key.
4. Don’t Avoid Creating a Routine
When you’re feeling out of place, it’s tempting to just go with the flow. But without a routine, it’s easy to feel lost and unanchored. Establishing daily rituals can bring a sense of normalcy and stability to your new life.
5. Don’t Ignore Your Feelings
It might seem easier to push your feelings aside, but ignoring your homesickness won’t make it go away. Acknowledge your feelings, talk about them with someone you trust, and remember that it’s okay and normal to feel this way.
6. Don’t Overcommit to Activities
Staying busy can be a good distraction, but overloading your schedule can lead to burnout. When you’re already feeling emotionally drained, taking on too much can make everything feel overwhelming.
7. Don’t Neglect Self-Care
It’s easy to let self-care slide when you’re homesick, but skipping out on basics like sleep, exercise, or relaxation can make you feel even worse. Prioritizing your well-being is crucial during this time.
8. Don’t Obsessively Contact People Back Home
While it’s important to stay connected with loved ones, constantly reaching out to them can prevent you from fully engaging with your new environment. Try to find a balance between staying in touch and living in the present.
9. Don’t Dwell on Negative Thoughts
Homesickness often brings a flood of negative thoughts—what you miss, what’s hard, what you wish was different. But dwelling on these thoughts can reinforce the negativity. Try to shift your focus to what’s positive about your current situation.
10. Don’t Avoid Exploring Your New Environment
When everything feels unfamiliar, it’s tempting to stick to your comfort zone. But avoiding your new surroundings only prolongs the adjustment period. Get out there, explore, and create new memories that will help you feel more connected.
Homesickness is a natural part of the journey when you’re far from home. But by avoiding these common pitfalls, you can navigate it more effectively and start embracing the adventure that lies ahead. Remember, it’s okay to miss home, but don’t let it keep you from making the most of where you are now!
